If you see that your newly joined affiliate is online, I would say greet them with a Team Mail rather than chatting. It would create a professional your impression of yours in his mind and in your mail include all those an ideal welcome mail must consist.
Bottomline is try to develop the initial contact through the Team Mails, you can use the chat box once you are used to with the affiliate.

When you sponsor an affiliate, the first you want to do is introduce yourself and let them know that you are glad to assist in any way that you can. It is critical that you make a good first impression with them in the first 24 to 48 hours. SFIChat is okay and if you can engage your new affiliate this way great! I like email because I can answer multiple messages at the same time and I always answer my emails. You don't need to go into a lot of detail, just who you are and why you are in SFI. Then you should set the expectation. Let your affiliate know that they need to be on the Fast Track. You can make EA2 without spending 1 dime out of pocket. So let them know that they need to take the following actions when sponsoring an affiliate remember:

1. Get them on the Fast Track - 500vps in 1st 24hrs.
2. Then get them to EA in the 1st month of signing up
3. Get them to EA2 every month there after.
4. Work with the workers to help them achieve their financial goals.
5. Help them grow their network.
6. Teach them to do exactly what you have done!

Finally, help them achieve their goals. Be an effective leader by using all of your affiliate tools to monitor your team and assist them with their progress. Be highly accessible and visible to your network and answer their questions asap. Review their versa points ledger at least once per week and make recommendations as needed. Support your network with a co-op, gift certificates, reassignments, and kudos. If you do this, you will be well on your way to reaching your goals. I open a chat window, I say Hello, Thank them and welcome them to the team. I assure them they have joined a great business. Then I tell them I am sending a proper welcome message.

I then go to their profile and learn a little about them. Where they are from, what motivates them, what is it they want to accomplish with SFI.

I then send a welcome email
1. Telling them about who I am, inviting them to visit me on FB (no business, get to know me).
2. I tell them in terms of their goals/motivations why SFI will help them.
3. I assure them of my help and say, "By way of help may I suggest you do these things to get 500 points this first day, then I include links that they have not done yet per their VP Ledger. I also try to include a document, or a Launch Pad that speaks to their goals or motivation.
4. I welcome them one last time and tell them they can be a free member of my Ad Co-op. I will help them reach the 1500 points and then I will ad them to my co-op.

Signed with Contact info and come visit my leadership page. In my signature I include the same picture I use in my profile so they recognize me in email and in SFI.

I have an email template I keep on file that I send them via the email they've used to register with SFI. If I use their registered email and it bounces back undeliverable, then I wait until I send out a new PSA Team Mail.

In my template letter, I welcome them to SFI and offer them the links to my new affiliate training videos on my blog.

I then point them to SBI Basics and the LaunchPad, and invite them to follow along with the videos for a better understanding of the system.

So far, I've only had one response and that person eventually dropped out.

I do the same thing with newly assigned PSAs and CSAs I get through S-Builder. One CSA has responded and we've conversed back and forth.

I think it's a hit or miss in any network marketing system, but I know I appreciated receiving a welcome email from my upline sponsor, and I appreciate the weekly encouraging emails I get from my upline CSA, so I'm repeating what he does.

Although I am really new to SFI, I followed the lead of my sponsor. I immediately contact them and welcome them, saying I am excited to be their sponsor and that I am here to help them succeed. I do tell them that SFI has so many tools available, that for the first week or two, simply log in, do their to do list, and learn all they can so they don't get overwhelmed.

Good question. If you find that some one has singed up with your link & he/she is in your team & find him/her online welcome them. Assure that they have taken right decision & he/she is not alone.
