I have rated many answers on this particular question. It is obvious there is no clear answer to this problem. But it did make me think and meditate about a solution.
I believe part of the solution is to write intriguing subject lines when we send email. It has to be interesting enough to cause a person to take time and open the message.
From personal experience, I get many e-mails and when I see a particular address, I think to myself that I will just get to it later. But I honestly don't.
My personal goal is to write compelling headlines, and short, useful messages. A call to action would also be something to test.

Too much of everything is bad.Even if it is very tasty.
So every thing should be given moderately. Specially for advice, it has to be moderate.
I feel you should contact your downline or team once a week in general.
However if some body is responding quickly, then the advice has to be given quickly too.
Your downline or team has to be divided into active & non active groups.
Contacts has to be made in proportion to the response by team members
There is no limit when it comes to contacting your downline or team as far as SFI is concerned except for unnecessary or irrelevant purposes or spamming. This is very powerful tool toward your growth in SFI and caution and discipline should be exercised not to encroach the reasonable boundary. With this, there is sustainable growth.
Contacting your team or downline is so vital to the success of the team that it should be taken seriously by all serious minded affilitates.
By contacting your team or downline, you help to get them used to the SFI program and help them to succeed, for the mutual benefit of all!
Considering the importance of this, contacting your team or downline should be as often as you have time for, and on a regular basis. That way, all stand to reap the benefit.
Assuming that you are working with adults that you want to have in your own team/downline, there is no need to remind or hassas them to do what they know they should do.
Once a week should be sufficient, but don't bore them with irrelevant or useless information, or the start up to do list but give tips, urgent actions to score extra points but ather than that non.

Too much of anything is good for nothing is the proverb...Always remember that..Weekly once team mail is enough and that's why SFI gives 30VP for once a week team mail..But as there is a lot to learn at the beginning, we can send many team mails which must be short and crispy and this will encourage our team..But once they are stabilized in SFI,there is not much to teach them..So when we keep on sending the messages it will be boring them because there is not much to send them after they are stabilized..
How would you like if you constantly get the same messages like "work hard.. advertise.. sponsor.. duplicate..have an SO ..etc" ...You can re-inforce your point in a different style in your subsequent mails..Its better to mix entertainment with advise to make it enthusiastic to read your mail..
I used to add funny and catchy phrases in my mails to prevent my downline from getting bored..Also i tell my people stories which carry my ideas to them and they get the ideas and also they have fun..So even though i send the same mails they don't think its too much because it will be funny and interesting to read...

How much is too much when contacting your downline or team?
It's an interesting question, in my opinion i think once a week is enough to communicate with your team or downline.
Because in this business i believe it's for matured and serious minded people, people who are determine to change their life for the better.
There's a saying that says a word is enough for a wise but that does not mean that when your team member or any of your downline urgently needs your help, you will not be there to assist him/her.
You must have a good relationship or communication with them so that your team will always stays alive.
Thanks
