Whether you advertise on a free site or use a fee-based site, there are two main components to a good advertisement. HOW you compose your ad is important. Use banners, photos or other eye-catching elements to get the reader to see your ad. Make use of anything to draw attention to your ad, like color, bold print or a personal description. Base what you put in your ad to the type of reader who would be frequenting the site. Advertise with products that would interest the readers there. Make sure that there is a usable link that WORKS to send the reader to the correct place to receive credit for your efforts.
The second component of an advertisement is WHERE you post it. Look for sites that are current. It is useless to post where no one visits. Look for current activity. Post ads in places that are related to the item or service that would be of interest to the members of the site. For example, don't post ads for car parts on a clothing or fashion page. Keep track of the actions that work or don't work for you and make adjustments on why they are or are not successful.

You have to consider the audience and the market you are advertising to. Every product has its own "niche" market. Health and beauty products as well as household cleaners seem to have a fairly broad market. Other products, however, are better suited to a target audience and need some research before being presented to the public. Do your research by investigating various markets and target specific products for specific demographic groups.
The key word is to be "persistent" in your marketing efforts. There are so many revenues for marketing on the internet and one can join them all (or as many as you can or afford to join) but if you are not persistent, your marketing efforts are a waste of time.
