Uploading photos onto online accounts is now a common practice.

The thinking behind this is all to do with the old saying ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ or something similar. Your picture helps to authenticate what you say and the fact that you are a real person.

Human beings by nature are judgmental. They will look at your photo and pass judgments whether you are someone they can be friends with, are you approachable, honest and trustworthy. They will judge if you are professional, intelligent, will you make a good sponsor, are you someone they can work with?

Your photo on your account must therefore portray or evoke the feelings that you want your viewer to experience. These will of course all be positive feelings.

Your business with SFI is a real and professional one but you are also a real person. I would suggest that through your photo you should portray both your professionalism and your humanity. You are a serious professional but you are also not a robot but a real, everyday person. Try and balance these out. This is not always possible.

I have seen some photos of professional looking mothers with their children. I like that. She is a professional but also an everyday human being. If I were a prospective affiliate I would feel comfortable working with her.

I believe that SFI encourages head shot pictures, similar to the ones suitable as passport photos. Those are fine as well and they do look professional. If you choose that style of photo, may I suggest that you avoid looking robotic. (I have seen many of those)

Remember it’s not just a photo. It has a message to convey and you want that to be a positive one.

Initially, when you start with SFI, might be a good idea to come in the door with a photo so that you can introduce yourself to the organization you will be working with. This is a good way to make friends and business relationships.

As Sponsors and team leaders, the need to uphold a professional image can not be overstated. In addition to communicating with words, we also communicate with our photos—this makes our dialogue more friendly, and personal.

They say one never gets a second chance to make a first good impression.

I want to say that a good photo would be where your face can be seen clearly, with simple background scenery, and without images of other people or animals. A smile adds a touch of professionalism and shows you are enthusiastic about yourself and your work.

First question: Why is it important to have a good SFI account photo?
In any business it is always a golden rule to work with people that you are able to meet personally or via webcam. That is when people do a business interaction you get to see the face of the people you are working with. On SFI every new affiliate who signs up and visits the affiliate center for the first time has a chance to meet you, they get to see that you are a real person but honestly a photo only allows your affiliates to see what you look like but through communication they will get to know who you are and how you are like, so it is not enough to look good on the picture but also you have to show them what you are made of through communication( phone, IM Chat, email).

Second Question: What makes a good photo?
the answer to this in one single sentence would be a photo that allows people to see your face clearly and accurately. Personally I prefer closeups of the face but it is not mandatory but just make sure you do not chose a group picture of one in which it is to distant and small that your face cannot be seen at all.

It is important to have a good account photo because this is how people get to know you. Your photo needs to show people that you are a trustworthy and 'nice'. It must also be professional. Personally I think a photo taken of you at a party with a glass of champers in your hand, or with your pet, or wearing revealing clothing are examples of inappropriate photos. They may not establish your credibility as a reliable business person with important things to say.

When you upload your photo to your email account and all the other places you frequent online, this becomes your brand and people begin to recognise you in different places. As they read your profile in different places and the comments you make in different forums, people will come to know you and relate to you personally. What you write will begin to influence people. Your photo is important because people will quickly recognise you and be more interested in reading what you have written, than they may be in reading something by someone who doesn't have their photo posted. It's as close to 'face-to-face' as you can get in the online world.

Doing your sfi business just like other internet based business is fast, global, efficient and inexpensive compared to offline businesses, it's major drawback though, is that, it is highly impersonal.

Therefore, one of the remedies is to have a good sfi account photo in place for the following reasons:

1) A good photo of you gives your sfi business some level of personalization. This make your customers/affiliates to know and believe that they are dealing with a real human being. This has a way of imparting positively on the fortunes of your business.

People form their first opinions of someone from that photo, so it is essential to "put your best foot (so to speak) forward" in that photo.

I think a good photo is one where the subject's face fills the frame without overwhelming it. We should remember that this IS a business presentation, so it should be a professional appearance, without being stiff and formal (does Gery look like he's in a suit and tie in his photo? No. But he DOES have a friendly, competent look to his photo, yes?)

Suggestion: while looking at your photo, (this applies to any person, not to you personally), do you see a friendly, open, competent person? You should not have to squint (or magnify) to see the person, and you should be able to recognize them in any other setting from having seen their SFI photo. Make sense? We don't have to look all stiff and formal, just like the regular, real people that we are.

It's important because internet makes things a little complicated, business on internet are great but you lose that personal touch and picture on your account reassure your client that you are human, nobody likes to talk to a computer, watch some professional business man or girl photo and that guy/girl tell them what to do and etc.
This photo is first contact between you and your SFI affiliate. Second it shows that you are serious in this business and not afraid to show yourself. Of course you encourage other PSA to put their picture. Who loves to work with faceless or fake profile people?

Good picture is good as one on your CV (Curriculum Vitae) if you never made your CV this would be picture with focus on face and the shoulders to be visible. There are no strict rules about photos but I think it will not be appropriate to have picture from party when you drunk or with friends on the beach. If you don't mind about this business stuff I wrote think about size of picture, more people on picture you are less visible, more body you show less visible and no good for business.
Simply don't put photos that you wouldn't put in CV when you apply for a job.

I may not get any votes on my answer being so late, but I’d like to add a bit more.

It is important to have a good photo in our SFI account for the reason being we are involved in an international business and people should know who we are.

People around the world joining our business would want to see if this business is real and if real people are running it, and not a faceless machine.

What makes a good photo?

A nice, smiling face looking straight at the camera, with clear and uncluttered background, would invite trust and interest from the people looking.

A real and friendly face of a person, not that of an avatar or a pet dog, penguin, or even a tattooed muscle, will be be reassuring and welcoming to people who come in contact with us.

It doesn't matter if the photo is in colour or in black and white, it should bear a truthful image of the person, alone, and not in company or hidden among the background scenery, or in a particular pose that may attract criticism or laughter or other comments.
