Good communication is the lifeblood of any business! I emphasize good communication because you can have communication that fails to get your point across or communication where everyone is talking but no one is listening. Listening is vital. You need to hear and understand what your team member is saying. If you are not sure that you are getting the correct information, you need to ask questions.
You also need to be courteous. If you get an email from a team member who needs help, respond promptly. Be polite with your responses. Always be honest with your team. If you are unsure of the answer, tell them and let them know that you will find the correct answer.
You are their team leader, not their boss. If you give them the information that they need to make a decision and they choose a different option, respect their decision. If they find that they have made a mistake, never, ever say, "I told you so!" Those are four words that no one ever wants to hear!
Make sure that you have a positive attitude. Offer encouragement and praise. Recognize important events in their lives. If you need to offer constructive criticism, make sure that you find something to praise them for because as Mary Poppins said, "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down!"
I learned how important communication is from my sponsor and I follow his example.
