Listening is at the heart of any marketing effort, online or offline, because you have to elicit the values of your target audience. If you do not know their values, you will fail at recruiting successfully. You might find the occasional customer that way, certainly, but by comparison, it will be as if by accident.
Imagine yourself in the role of a stranger who has never heard of TripleClicks, talking to me. The first thing I'm going to do is ask you about yourself: What do you do for a living? How do you have fun? What is it you would like to do? These questions will tell me exactly what aspects of TripleClicks will interest you the most and how to best engage you with them. It's the same with groups of people--you listen to them and find out their common value, and you advertise and promote to them based on that common value.
You cannot find that common value without listening.
