The most effective strategies I can think of are reading the Start, SFI Basics, and Launchpad pages. A newbie to SFI can get a feel for everything there is to be learned here.
I'd also like to add that having a good Sponsor/Upline is key. They can teach said newbie what they know in a way that they can understand (or "overstand," as my mother would say), so that they may duplicate what their Sponsor and Upline are doing.
