I think both can provide good value, but neither is a stand-alone solution.
An advertising co-op will mean you need to collect subscription payments from your team (unless you are funding it for them). It will also require that you have a strategy in place to
a) spread the chosen ads far and wide, or
b) drive traffic to the places you have put the ads, or
c) both (preferable).
It can mean a lot of work to do it right, but the rewards in terms of team growth will be worth the effort. And if you use the SFI co-op system it will automatically distribute the resulting sign-ups among the participating members for you.
When it comes to blogging, it depends on what you want to achieve with your blog.
If your blog is designed to attract new people to SFI, then, like the co-op, you will also need to create a mechanism to drive traffic to the blog. That could mean promoting it through text ads, or in traffic exchanges, safe lists or other (less impersonal) email distribution systems. Again, this can be quite a bit of work, but the rewards will come, eventually. Bear in mind that you are effectively adding an extra step to the recruitment process, which may mean another opportunity for people to opt out. But those who opt in will be more likely to become active, so I would suggest that you think of the blog as a filter rather than a magnet when you are deciding on your content.
On the other hand, if the aim of your blog is to inform and motivate your existing team, you will only need to promote it to your team, and your advice can be more practical and specific. This can be a very useful tool, and will save you a lot of group mailing over time. It's value will come from greater activity from your existing team.
Hope this helps.
