One of the best ways I have found to really keep track of how things are going ad-wise is bitly.com. It's a site where you can create custom links that you can track to see how many click happened and when. It's free and you can create as many links as you want. What I sometimes do, depending on my campaign, is that I use it in combination with social media. You can create a special link (or a number of specially tagged links) specifying a particular social network, make that link a bitly and post. I've been able to see who's working and who's not that way.
You can specially tag links using Google's URL builder, which is also free. You can create a link for a text ad, for example, and one for a banner ad. Both would be different links in bitly and you can track to see which is getting more clicks, what times and what days.
There are plenty of other ways but I find that with these simple free tactics, I'm able to really get a handle on my advertising efforts without spending too much
