I am very motivated to answer your question, because I am also a shy person and I used to be very clumsy in face to face communication. So, I would like to share some tips that helped me and might also help you. I divided those tips into two categories: preparation and practice.
PREPARATION
1. First of all prepare your marketing aids, such as x-cards, flyers etc.
2. Think of few sentences which you would say while giving an x-card or a flyer to someone. Write down those sentences.
3. Now, think of some additional questions that a person might ask you. Write them down. Answer those question in a short and concise manner. Write down the answers too.
4. Now, read out loud everything you wrote. This will help you memorize your speech, but also to hear yourself talking about your marketing aids and how it all sounds. After hearing yourself, maybe you will want to make some changes to your speech.
PRACTICE
1. Stand in front of a mirror and act out a conversation. You can use your notes if you need to. Try to concentrate on what you are saying, but also on how you are saying it. Practice your speech, your voice pitch and your body language.
2. Now go a step further and practice this conversation with someone close to you, e.g. a spouse, sibling, parent or a close friend.
3. Next step is to try to promote your business to people you know but you are not very close to, e.g. acquaintances, neighbors etc. In this step, pay attention to your body language, especially to eye contact. This is very important, because people know you are truthful when you look them in the eyes.
4. Now, try approaching the strangers in the street. Since you are thoroughly prepared, it should now be much easier for you. And even if you still don't feel very comfortable talking to strangers, you should know that it gets easier every time.
