I would say your long-term goals should be realistic but ambitious - what you really believe you want and deserve.
Your short-term goals from month to month can serve to keep you going or it can make you feel you are failing. I think these should be a challenge but still realistic and do-able.
Imagine you set your monthly goals too high and you never succeed - wouldn't you feel like you are failing?
Now imagine you take baby steps and set realistic goals and you see your progress - how happy and proud would you feel?
