I have heard several people say that free advertising does work for them. I would think if you have a great ad with the right information that can grab the attention of prospects it may work for you. However, there are so many people out there using the free ads that it's hard to stay on top of the list. By paying for your ad you will have less competition compared to the free ads. That is why when you are listing with free ads they offer you upgrades for a few dollars in order for you to be more noticeable among all those free ads. Your social media can be used as free advertising just by putting a link to SFI on it.
If you are willing to spend a little and have a small budget try the following:
You may try the free ads but pay for one upgrade to stand out better.
You can use smaller papers where the ads are less expensive.
You may also try using the S-Builder through SFI for twenty two dollars a month.
S-Builder makes sense because for a small amount you are able to reach more people with a professional ad at a very minimal cost compared to what you would pay for those ads yourself.
