I seldom get a response, probably because a number of new affiliates either don't realize I'm trying to initiate a chat session, or because they're off in a different window doing something else and don't see the chat.
And, of course, I always follow up that contact with my email to them with more detailed information about getting started and how to contact me for help.

I would wait a few minutes while I read the new Affiliate's profile to give me an idea where he/she's coming from so I can personalise my welcome letter. Then I would compose my letter with a warm welcome to SFI and to my marketing team, and offer of assistance as a Sponsor, and a request to send me an e-mail if additional information is needed. To initiate a chat on line can be problematic due to time and language differences.

BUT!! There is a catch, they must do this within 24 hours of signing up at SFI.
After that then you can direct them to the basics, and the launchpad, and the to-do-list tab. Let them know how important right off just how important that collecting Versa Points are. That they are equal to income, and once they make their 1500 points they become Executive Affiliates which automatically puts them in a higher income bracket.
But if you can get them to earn that Fast Track this would be a great booster for them.

When you see the gold bubble, you have permission to contact them. I always contact them with "Hi, I'm Marlene your sponsor or co sponsor, and I'm glad to see you online today. I just want to let you know that I'm here for you and want to see you succeed. If there is anything I can do to help contact me at: (I include my email address). I find that many of them don't realize that they have a message from you. Also sometimes the messages don't go through. By that I mean that I have been told by some of my people that they answer my IM's and I never get it. Therefore, I follow it up with a personal email, letting them know I sent them an IM and was thrilled to see that they were online today. If they are long time PSA's or CSA's, I just say "Hi, I appreciate you and all you do. Thanks." I try to send this message or something similar at least once a month when I see them online.

You should immediately contact them through SFI IM Introduce yourself as their
sponsor and Welcome them. Let them know that they have made an excellent decision
in electing SFI as their business. Also, let your new affiliate know how important
it is to complete their profile tasks within 24 hrs and that they will receive bonus points for doing so.
Welcome him/her to your group and introduce yourself. Then lead him/her to accomplish the assignments given on the SFI site. Afterwards, guide him/her (better still, give a brief rundown) on what other things to do and the various avenues that he/she will have to take and make them understand that these are vital to their success.

More often than not, the affiliate is unsure what to do and a friendly conversation giving him a simple guide will be very helpful. What then should you say when you initiate the chat?
1. Introduce yourself to the affiliate as his/her sponsor.
2. Assure them that they've made the right decision to join SFI and tell him/her that you exist to support and help them, and that they can always count on your assistance.
3. Share your contact details (emails, phone number) so the affiliate can easily contact you.
4. Point them to your Leadership page for additional information and guidance.
5. Be brief, very friendly and keep things simple. Point them to the SFI Basics and tell them the important of starting well by getting at least 500 VP on their 1st 24 hours on SFI.
