Contests are a good incentive to reach higher, but remember when you run a contest that you should keep it reasonable and don't give away more than you can afford to. Also, be aware that there are some who won't move no matter what you do. They're tire kickers and there are always going to be these types no matter what business you're in. Work with the workers and don't let the ones who won't work worry you. They either get it, or they don't. It's that simple.
I worked as a sales manager for many years and love to offer contests as a form of encouragement. Currently, I run more than one contest for my team. I reward them with personal PSA reassignments for reaching and maintaining EA status. I give them even more reassignments for reaching TL status. I also have a contest that I offer to anyone PSA or CSA's that generate new sales on Triple Clicks.
The problem that I have found is that most of my PSA's do not sign up for the contests. I find that I really have to go out of my way to email the team and promote the contests and tell them where to sign up. Even then, most do not reply! I find that contests just aren't on the radar of most of my team.
To make the contests do their job in encouraging team members and rewarding their efforts, I watch their progress and go ahead and reward them with reassignments anyway! My PSA's appreciate their new downline members and I get credit for the reassignments in the form of VP. It is a win-win for all of us. The reassigned PSA's are still in my downline so I still benefit from their progress in SFI.
I believe that contests are underutilized in SFI. No one in my upline offers any that I can find on their leadership pages. I think contests can offer encouragement to team members and can break the monotony in any business. I encourage you to start and promote a contest for your team.

In my own opinion and experience, incentives and contests will not motivate someone who is not already motivated and determined in building their own business.
We need to remember that what really motivates people is their "WHY", meaning the core foundational reasons for doing the business in the first place. This is something that lies at Heart and that is so fundamental that no one can really stop this person if her "WHY" is strong enough. On the other hand, if the "WHY" is not strong enough as to motivate the person to get started and do what needs to be done to build their business, meet their goals and achieved success, nothing will really be powerful enough to get them started... even a small incentive or contest.
I personally feel that what is most important is to find a way that each person - when ever possible - can feel that we truly have their interest at heart and that they are important to us... not an easy task to accomplish in a virtual world though ;-)
However, an incentive or contest will definitely bring those that I really motivated and working their business anyway, to move one step further, to reach forward to get that incentive. So, it allows your leader to give the best of themselves and it allows you to really see who are your leaders.

I think that running contests are not very useful.
Much better motivate affiliates to work and give them unexpected rewards.
Much better advice, example and answer their questions.
I Had no one active in my downline , so i offered 25 tcredits to anyone getting some VP by the end of oct, let me tell you i now have 11 people at last count 2 days ago rockin and rollin ! and tcredits are always fun to have !michael zaenglein 11800242

Without any doubt it's a marvelous idea to invite your PSAs for contests at any stage. Thrill of contests & rewards will be a bounty with a letter of credit. It definitely will serve as a great incentive to motivate PSAs.
Do the following:
Announce an informative & constructive contest. Follow up. Declare results. Quick distribution of rewards. All by team mail without any delay. Will be worthwhile for any team leader.

I tried it and it is working, the one I gave some rewards are motivated to continue and this really lift them up to act, which I think it is great specially if you have some budget, like buying TCREDITS as a reward for them..
Running Contests certainly gives the PSA's an incentive to work hard and to work as a team! I myself have not ran a contest yet, but coming from the other end, if I was offered a chance in a contest it would give motivation and a goal to work up to. I believe it's good practice for those that have trouble meeting a goal. It helps them see in the long run that working up to a certain goal pays off!
Make sure that the gifts that you are giving is worth the time and effort for people to join the contest. If people do not think that the gifts are worth the effort, they will not even join in and do the contest.
Make it so that all can join in if they choose.
Make it optional for them to join in or not.
Give them ideas on how they can do better with the contest from time to time and keep them up to date with what is happening in the contest.
Make it fun and easy to do.
Have clear guidelines on the way to win: Example--if you do this amount of sales or higher then you can win this prize.
Make sure that you name the winner so that every one know who it was.

Running contests, creating rewards and incentives without a doubt is an effective and well tested way to motivate and build your team. However certain vital points need to be considered.
1. Set it up in a manner that all your team members can participate in the contest for a start.
2. Always update your team periodically on who is in or out of the contest.
3. Ensure the contest is visible to your team members, eg in your Group Mailer, include your leadership page link and highlight on that.
