Good question. First and foremost, it really depends on your ability and knowledge about advertising. You have to learn and train he basic way of advertising. Both are effective and it really depends on your passion of consistency.
If your passion is blogging, then you can maximize your SFI Business. On the other hand, if you have a budget for advertising, by all means..enjoy and earn on it.

A free blog with an established blogging webservice is by far better than having a regular hosted website.
After all that is what your SFI/TC is all about and it is done in a way it would win the world championship.
I prefer to not try to "re-invent the wheel" and spend my valuable time doing something better like developing my promtions in all the ways explained by SFI.

I would suggest both, the more advertising you have over a broader spectrum of media, and social media, the better chance you have of more people, prospect affiliates, you have of seeing your adds, thus improving your chances of attracting new affiliates, and improving your downline team, therefore improving your SFI business, so the more adds, in more places you have the better, I suppose.

I would have to go with a blog. People like to know there is a real person behind the words instead of an automated system. Blogs are a sure way to get across to people. You keep it real, explain the facts and gain they respect. I have a site that I write for and it's hard to pull them over here to SFI without loosing my account. It's spamming but I can talk about it. It's pretty cool to see all the people that is interested. I recommend a blog any day.

Both are effective, the difference is in how you set up.
I personally use both, provided that I used the right words about SFI.
Think about it, people are looking for information, make decisions.
Not quite enough sign up, should work.
Determined will accept change.
