The number one biggest mistake I believe is thinking you know what the customer wants. Put another way might be to say you believe your customer wants, or likes what you do.
The most important thing is to listen to your customer. To listen to what they say about what they want/need.
This means the most important thing you can do in advertising is open a dialogue with your prospective customer. You want to advertise in ways that builds a dialogue or a communication with your prospect.
The second most important thing, advertise every way every where. Why, because you do not know your customer likes/wants/needs. You post a banner, it is blue. Why? Because you like blue. But your customer likes red. So I post red banners, blue banners, green banners, pink banners, yellow banners, black banners. Well you get it.
1 place 1 ad no good. 10 places, 10 ads, better. 100 places 100 ads, even better.
