Getting active sign ups and sales boils down to luck and simply having your ad be in the right place at the right time. In all honesty, thus far I have not noticed any difference between using free advertising and paid website traffic in terms of generating active referrals.
I don't take that to mean that paid advertising is ineffective, however. I take that to mean that I have not been advertising in the right places and at the right time. It is important to choose paid advertising methods that are not already inundated with SFI ads. That is where being in the right place at the right time comes in. Before purchasing website traffic, check it out to see how many competing ads are already running. Then, if there are not many SFI ads, go for it!
I am currently experimenting with purchasing website traffic on Clixsense. Most of my advertising thus far has been on free traffic exchanges, and frankly they do not generate much at all in the way of active referrals. Most of the people on them are just trying to get their ads seen and there do not seem to be many who are actively seeking an online business of their own.
With paid advertising the chances are probably much better at finding a genuinely interested person, but I would research first and start slow so that a lot of money is not wasted on ineffective paid website traffic. I wish you much luck and success!
