Learning to be a good team leader is like learning how to ride a bike. At first, no one is a skilled rider. But with practice, mastery is certain. It's the same with leadership. We must learn to be effective at applying the art of communication and persuasion. All effective leaders can do this. This is a learned trait and certainly one can learn from mentors, and through education.
Moreover as your team grows, you must be flexible with your time. Our business is a global one and we can't always expect to communicate in our time zone. So it going to be important for you to avail hours that work for your team. I spend many late nights supporting my team as well as partners.
In addition, you must be willing to share information with your team. Some people are challenged by the fact that they need to divulge strategies with others. There is no need for this because everyone has a chance for success in proportion to the commitment they make to the business. I don't see myself as competing for PSAs, or auctions. Instead, I see the big picture and this is we all benefit from the activity within SFI as a whole.
Leaders are selfless and gracious toward others. They respect other people's skill sets and learn how to use human resources to benefit the team. Remember that leaders should impart such value to the team that the team is beholden to them. Give respect and get respect. Never leave a team member in a worst disposition than when you interacted with them. You will certainly gain their trust and loyalty by doing so.
