SFI has great ways to communicate with your team, but am I missing out by not using outside resources too like email, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, etc.?
The communication resources provided by SFI are in my opinion adequate for corresponding with your team on a regular basis. You have mentioned Email, as one of the outside resources but where possible this is already available at SFI.
However, if you want to facilitate a chat with most members of your team at the same time, then outside resources such as conference calls provided by Skype or Webinar are very useful.
As your relationship with your team members grows, it will be easier for your team members to join your Facebook page.
It is best to utilise resources at your disposal to maximise your means of communication, bearing in mind that each resource serves a specific need. For example, PSA mailer, CSA mailer or Genealogy enables you to send a newsletter or any message to all or a specific group of your team. And E-cards are a great way of sending congratulatory messages to individual team members. On the other hand a conference call achieves what cannot be met by these examples, that is a live chat.
