SFI has great ways to communicate with your team, but am I missing out by not using outside resources too like email, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, etc.?
Don't worry about becoming too involved on outside tools. Especially if you are going to build a bit team. Because of the success rate in SFI you will want to have a lot of PSA's so you will end up with at least 5 EA's or higher. Even though you want to stay in touch with your downline through the PSA and CSA mailers, you are going to be focusing on your Movers.
It's possible you may decide to use Messenger to talk with your Movers, but if you have a couple thousand PSA's that's not going to work so well. So there are considerations with things of this nature. You could start a private or secret group on Facebook for your EA's or higher, sharing ideas among your team can be highly beneficial. You can also use it as an incentive for the rest of your team and post something on your Leadership page that states something to the effect that anyone who reaches at least EA2 will be given access to the private group for your team. Keep in mind however, that some people are not on facebook so you will have to decide what will work best for your team.
