Thanks to modern technology we have a choice. Borders and distance no longer matter - we can communicate with people all over the world. That means you can recruit where ever you like.
BUT - just because you can, it does not mean it is the best idea ever. We have to take a couple of factors into consideration. Keep in mind - I am only trying to make you think about your unique situation. What you decide to do will still be your choice. There realy is no right and no wrong decisions. Local and international have their own advantages and disadvantages. How you are able to overcome obstacles will depend on you.
1. Language - how well can you communicate with people speaking a different language than
you?
We have the translation tool available to us - but think about it. Say you have 10 affiliates
from 10 different countries, speaking 10 different languages. Let's say for argument's sake
none of them can understand English well enough to communicate effectively. Do you have
enough time to translate and communicate with them individually?
I have another concern around language and the translator tool. I did an experiment - I wrote
a few sentences in English and then translated it to my home language - what came out on
the other side (in my home language) was not always what I was trying to say.
Recruiting locally is also not the best option for me personally - why? Because we have 11
official languages in my country and I am fluent in only 2 of them. Although a lot of people
can speak and understand English a lot of my fellow countrymen battles to communicate in
English. My solution is to concentrate on English Speaking countries.
2. Cultural differences can also present a challenge - but in my opinion nothing that we can not
overcome. You just have to be sensitive and tolerant of other cultures. I also view it as a
good thing to learn about different cultures.
3. Different countries also have different challenges and traits that make them unique. When
it comes to this I prefer people from my own country - regardless of the language differences.
Our economy is just not the best climate to work in. Our infra structure (Eg. our postal service)
is also not the best. On the flipside - the economy and huge unemployment rate is also what
gives us a better chance to recruit. People here are looking for ways to support themselves
and their families and they are not scared to give it a go - despite the challenges.
So you see, where you are, your culture and your language strengths and weaknessess will guide you to decide where to concentrate your efforts. Look at your situation and make a decision that will work for YOU. I only mentioned 3 factors because that is what I have to take into consideration, but I am sure you might have more to think about or even different factors.
