Many people have significant distress when they have to talk about a topic to a stranger. Some find it an even more gigantic task talking to a group but in both cases if you keep in mind these basics, you should have no problem with a one on one approach.
1. I have found with experience that if you know your subject well, you can ease your way into a conversation without any difficulty. This product knowledge (SFI) helps boost your confidence as you take the prospect across the various areas of SFI.
2. When you start conversing, look out of signs that will help you drive your point(s) with a lot more conviction. For example, if you are talking to a lady who you feel loves wearing jewelry, this is one indicator which can help you talk about general topics of interest. Therefore it is easy to recruit someone with whom you share a common interest.
3. One on one conversations are usually easier to handle than group discussions because your focus is on one person - it helps to get a little more background and become familiar with the prospect. Working conditions, family, pets, what their hobbies are - these are some subjects where you are not probing or being intrusive into their private matters.
4. Give a chance to the other person to talk; we often forget that you do not want to sound as though you are trying to sell them something. If the prospect realizes this, he/she may not give you the attention required to finally recruit them.
5. I like to take a few important details off the prospect because it will help you communicate with them at a later date if the present time is not convenient. Telephone, email address and do not forget to keep your business cards handy. A professional business card is extremely essential because it tells the prospect that you are serious in what you do and this can create other recruiting methods - like a presentation for a larger group of the prospect's friends.
