If you want to draw in new affiliates by way of newspaper, then make sure it's something that can catch their eye. At the same time, you don't want it to look overly flashy. And, always emphasize proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation in your ad. A lot of people are quite skeptical these days and if they see something amiss in an advertisement for a business opportunity, they'll automatically write it off as a scam.
Make your ad relate to the reader, be they a college student, a retiree, or someone who's either been laid off/fired from job and can barely keep their head above water. Give them a snippet of your situation and, of course, add your gateway. ;)
Keep in mind that it's a bit more expensive to advertise in a major newspaper in your area, so it's best to start locally (such as neighborhood newspapers). Or, if you're a college student, you can advertise SFI in your campus newspaper.
In a nutshell, your newspaper ad must be something to grab a prospect's attention and not drive them away.
