There is no best one in my opinion, but it rather depends on your experience, strategic objective and how you want to get there. It is a common knowledge that you can target a much greater number of people online than offline, however, I also believe that you can 'laser' target prospects by offline methods, but 'laser' targeting using online approach may be difficult if not very expensive. So which is better in the regard? Is it the one with which there is a little degree of predictability of the likely behaviour of your offline signups or the one where the predictability of behaviour is much more abstract in nature?
Again, those that are experienced, have the financial muscle and a sizable network may want to use the online approach because they can recruit thousands of affiliates within a short time, with the believe that the more they recruit the higher the probability of signing active ones. They also have the conviction that they may be able to do all it takes to guide and support them to become active and subsequently successful. This is true at times.
Some others who may want to have control over who their prospects should be, because they may have some idea who they are or what they will be inclined to participate in, so they may be inclined to reduce the flock of supposedly inactive affiliates by targeting offline, with the believe that these type of signups are easier to guide and support to become active and probably successful. This may also be true at times, especially from their warm market.
There are those who are not good with computers, other similar devices and the internet, so such affiliates have no choice, until they learn, but to do offline recruiting. This is one of the obvious reasons why one may prefer the offline methods. What of the cost involved? Both do incur some costs and what may likely make one more costly will have to do with how far you are likely to go, so I will not make this a big deal.
As you can see, both methods have its benefits and you may want to adhere to the one that suits you and closely aligns with your objectives. However, it is always a good business strategy to be amenable to the dynamics of the business world which is heavily tilted towards online marketing, so in the 21st century we all should be embracing online technology in carrying out our business, especially the SFI recruiting process. Using online methods do no distract from also applying offline recruiting methods, especially if engaging in localised prospecting, so you can use both as the occasion warrants.
