These are two different aspects of SFI business you can generate income from, so there is nothing wrong if you do both, provided you have the ability and the wherewithal to also become an ECA yourself. You see, when you do both you earn both ways; earning 10% ECA royalties from the sales of your referred ECAs and selling and making profit from your ECA store also.
Having said this, it is not a good business strategy to become an ECA yourself for the sake of becoming one, especially if you cannot run an online store. This is because opening an ECA store is far more than just that, but also involves a well design marketing strategy to be very competitive and not to bring the integrity of TC into disrepute. This means you will need to be professional in your dealings with customers and be responsive to their queries on a timely and consistent manner, otherwise you will be reported and given a low rating which are recipe for failure as an ECA and may lead to your removal.
As you can see, it may be better to refer ECAs who have the experience and professional discipline to successful and professionally operate an ECA store, so that you can better engage in the area you have strength, which is to promote your referred ECA store, in order to increase the potential of earning 10% royalties from their store. The more sales your referred ECA makes, the more earnings you make as the referral, so it is in your own interest to promote the store.
TC is becoming less tolerant with under performing ECAs especially in the aspect of customer satisfaction, so any aspiring ECA needs to up his/her game in order not incur the wrath of SFI, which could easily and quickly happen these days, so my advice will be to exercise caution, understand what is required and expected of you before you make a decision if you want to become an ECA yourself, especially if you have no previous experience.
In conclusion, I will add that there is nothing wrong in doing both, but it is better to stick to what you are good at, rather than to be all over the place for the sake of it.
