I like the full genealogy when I am using the filters. Once a month I go through each of the filters, because they give me a different perspective on how my whole group is progressing. I also use different sorts once a month for the same reason.
Most of the time I use the sort for todays VP. That lets me know how my workers are progressing. If I see that they aren't getting the VP they should on a particular day, I go to their ledgers and check and see if they are missing something or if I can give them a helpful tip.
I use the filters if I need to see a particular person for some reason, or have a specific group I want to target and send more help to. For instance those who have worked SFI in the past and quit. I try to send this group a separate mailing every month to motivate them to do more SFi. I find out a lot from this group. They are more apt to answer my message and let me know why they quit. I use the sort to get the Total VP, and then the communication filter to send an Ecard to these members.
I use the communication filter more than most of the other filters because of the Ecard availability there.
I can sort for the group I want, then develop a common ecard and copy and paste it to every one I feel will benefit from the card. This doesn't take a lot of time and get them some information in a great way.
