There's a significant trade-off between online and offline recruiting: online reaches more traffic at the expense of being impersonal, while offline, you can tailor your response to individual needs and interests, but you're reaching far fewer people. I find that I enjoy offline recruiting more because I maintain more connections and build more friendships that way, but I still allow some time each month for online recruiting as well. I don't know that one is necessarily better than the other for all people, however--some may prefer to keep all associations online, for example.
