I'm sure you've heard of the old adage that reads 'Don't put all your eggs into one basket.' This is sage advice for all of your investments and the money you put into advertising is no exception. You need to spread your advertising dollar around and then track the results.
1. Many people think they will get the best deals by doing it by themselves. They say that the lawyer that represents himself has a fool for a client. Perhaps you might put some of your seed capital into a coop where a dispassionate professional is managing the advertising buys. Buying units in the S-builder coop has worked well for me and perhaps it will be good for you too.
2. If you're disappointed with Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising you've done, don't just turn your back on it. You can try going to a different program or perhaps you're better off simply refining your ads better. Closely examine what your competition is doing. If it is working for them then perhaps you can do something similar but different enough to be your original idea.
3. Step back to look at the broader picture of precisely what you want your advertising to do and who you want to target so you can focus down tighter to meet your objectives.
4. I can't stress this one enough. You NEED to track your results and be ready to 'roll out' and go big where you're getting profitable results.
Unsatisfactory results in advertising are usually the result of over-spending after under-evaluating. Make your media buys small in scale until you've got your message tweaked to where it is effective and THEN run with it.
