With all my signups, I make one general assumption: I assume that whoever is joining SFI under me is a newbie and has little to no idea about business and internet marketing.
With this in mind, I take it as my responsibility as their sponsor to introduce and educate them on the pros and cons of marketing and advertising right from the most basics to more advanced ways to enable them become savvy marketers. Over the course of the training, they will come to realise themselves the importance of advertising.
What are you doing that is working for you? Tell them! What advertising methods are you using that is bringing in positive results? Introduce them to those methods. They look to you for guidance so lead the way so they can follow in your steps.
This training can take various forms: you could jot down your methods in a simple pdf download titled say "SFI workbook" that is immediately available for download to each new signup to read and follow, it could be in video format or weekly call ins. Whatever way works for you, employ it. The most important thing is that they are being trained and showed what to do in a step by step format.
In addition, I am constantly testing new advertising resources and when I get a winner, I announce it to my downline so they can key in too. With a strategy like this, you get an active and robust downline in no time.
