I think the question is not how many you need to sponsor, it is how many active affiliates you need to sponsor.
I got 12 new affiliates last month. 9 of them signed up and without doing one single thing and earning 0 VP they just never came back. 3 of them signed up, earned 150 VP immediately and they were gone. So how many active affiliates did I get last month? 0
I send a welcome e-card the moment I receive notification that I have a new affiliate. Then I send a special welcome letter to introduce myself, give them my e-mail address and to give them a few start up tips. Still they just do not react.
Until we figure out how to get every sign up to be active I would say you have to sponsor as many as you can. As for myself - if I have 5 active affiliates and I know they won't quit I will support them like kings and queens until they are diamond leaders. At that point I will decide if I am gong to retire or am I going to start with 5 new affiliates. (nice to dream, isn't it?)
