Every month there are contest like VP Rank and Country Rank, and it would be impossible for a new member to rank on these leader boards if they were facing an affiliate who has been generating VP for 17 years and has millions of VP saved up. Since we all start back at Zero each month you are not facing years of investments, you arent facing the person who dumped $10,000 into their business 6 years ago for the rank, you are facing other affiliates who all started with zero VP this month.
Add in the fact that our rank is adjusted by our VP earned in a month and each month it is required to re-earn your rank and you can see exactly why these VP expire but think of it this way.
If you work really hard in a business and get promoted this month to manager for all that hard work it would be fair to you and fair to the company. If in month two you stop doing all that hard work and just rest on your prior accomplishments it would not be fair for the business to have to pay you for work you are not doing, so in a offline company I am betting by the end of month two you wouldn't be a manager any more.
Likewise with SFI if you do the work this month and make money, earn a leadership rank, get the perks and rewards, as well as the status it's fair to you and to SFI. But if you come in next month and do nothing, SFI can't be expected to pay you what you earned the month before so your rank goes away, you lose the perks, and you earn only what your effort is worth.
