The monthly VP number resets to zero because a new calendar month has begun. Your ranking for each month is determined by the number of VP you accumulate in that calendar month. For example, points earned in March will not count towards your April ranking. Only points earned in April will count.
If your team members are concerned that they are losing those points, you can explain that there are two sets of numbers in the top right hand corner of their home page. One is the number of points they have earned this month, and the other is the total number of points they have accumulated, so they can see they have not actually lost the points. It's just that they no longer relate to the current month.
Eventually they will notice that the second number (total VP) will start to drop as well. This is because some VP only last for 6 months (the ones shown in red on the left side of your to-so list). This is done so that people who have been around for years are not the only ones who can reach the top of the leader-board. In the leader-boards, SFI want to recognize those who are active now, not those who were once active.
