ORGANIC ACTIVITY would be my answer to your questions. When you visit a website look for signs of genuine human CUSTOMER activity, like comments, likes, shares, forums etc. This doesn't stand for websites that are specialized to provide paid, targeted advertising. You go there to design you advertising campaign.
The other ways are to search with rankings of websites.
Search for rankings of:
- Website activity. You will be able to find information about websites that have most traffic, visits and activity. But there is another twist to that- are those websites where customers are active or are the advertisers only ones visiting them?
- Website conversions. You should also be able to track information about how much different websites convert etc. what websites provide genuine customer activity.
- Niche groups. Different kind of audience visit different kinds of websites, and that could be related to perimeters such as age, ethnicity, locations etc. Some websites are designed and optimized to reach for specific audiences and you must know what kind of audience that is.
So, when you come across a website you wish to advertise in, make sure to search for relevant information for that website regarding organic activity, amount of traffic and visits, website conversions and niche audience group.
You can also look up different rankings of websites based on these parameters.
I hope I helped you a little bit.
