First let's look at fear of success, then we will look at how to get past this with team members. Understanding fear is key here.
Fear of success... sounds odd. Why would someone be afraid of success?
Success isn't seen as the norm. It's seen as something that's out of reach and therefore has to be achieved. Consequently, fear comes in two parts:
1) Fear of coming out of one's comfort zone while on the road to success.
2) Fear of actually achieving success as this is unfamiliar territory.
Either way, fear is fear. It is an emotion you feel more at the thought of something, or of doing something. If you are about to do something new and bold, fear is a natural precursor to the action itself.
The fear can be so great that it becomes a hindrance to what you want to do. It holds you back and can sometimes cripple you emotionally, so much so that it prevents you taking whatever action you know you must take.
Dealing with fear, and other emotions, is all part of life's journey. We are all making that journey every single day.
So let's broaden the subject a little. You may find this interesting as it may help everyone to better understand, not only fear, but emotions in general.
What is fear? It is a negative emotion.
What is confidence? It is a positive emotion.
What are negative emotions? These are bad feelings you experience.
What are positive emotions? These are good feelings you experience.
If you experience good emotions, then you are experiencing positive emotions. This means that you are in a good place, which means that you can be more creative from this place and you can better deal with obstacles and challenges.
If you experience bad emotions, then you are experiencing negative emotions. This means that you are not in a good place, which means that you will be more self-sabotaging from this place. Challenges and obstacles are then blown out of all proportion.
So your emotions tell you whether you are on the right course or not. If something feels good, you are on course. If something doesn't feel good, you are off course.
Ultimately, you need to put yourself in a good place emotionally and work from there. You need to focus on the good and not the bad. There is good and bad in every person's lives. It is a matter of where you choose to focus.
So for your team help them understand the good and bad emotions, in a broad sense. Some will have fear. Some will have doubt. Some will have worry. Some will have an avalanche of mixed emotions.
Get them to broaden it and categorize the emotion(s) as either good or bad. Then encourage them to focus on the good emotions so as to bring them to a better place, a place of creativity.
Fear will still be in the background. However, when coming from a place of feeling better, rather than feeling bad, then fear (and other negative emotions) are much more easily manageable.
This also applies to all areas in life. You are better able to deal with situations and challenges when you feel good than when you feel bad.
