I say both are important. You might be standing at a bus, streetcar or subway stop (I live in downtown Toronto, Canada; we have all three) and you might end up in a conversation. Time to talk about SFI and TripleClicks.
If I have to choose one, I choose globally on the Internet because of exposure and Internet accessibility.
I searched online right before I started to answer your question. 40% of the world's population has an Internet connection; 60% of the Internet connections have mobile access; and 34% of cell phone users are online with their phones. (Yup, I'm one of them; I work on my smartphone.) Those are competitive numbers to play with versus getting local, up close and personal with people. A lot less people.
Sure, you might be able to walk up to 12 people, talk until you're blue in the face and sign them all up. How much time and effort did it take? You can contact individuals or mass market on the Internet.
The choice is yours in the end. If you don't want to be personal and local, I think globally on the Internet is the ticket.
