I have had 3 short vacations since joining SFI. The first thing I do is contact the hotels/motels or guest houses I will be staying at to check if they have an internet connection I can use. If the answer is no then I ask if there are any internet cafes within the vicinity.
So far all the places I have stayed at have had internet access available to their customers, and so I have not had to make any alternative arrangements.
I suppose the length of the vacation will also play a part in whether you want to risk having internet access, especially if there is likely to be a lot of travelling involved.
If you are uncertain of the internet access that will be available to you then you can put yourself on vacation. By doing this you preserve all your badges. Two things to remember when you are doing this is you will lose 1 day from your daily VersaPoints streak for every day you are registered as being on vacation, and you will not be getting your daily VersaPoints.
I email all my affiliates when I am going to be away and let them know I may not be available between the dates of my vacation.
I do try to find away to log in at least once a day just to check if any of my downline have contacted me and also to check if I have any new PSA or CSA. If I have then I make sure I email them and send them a welcome e-card.
