The answer is actually short and sweet:
When you have achieved the long term goals that you set for yourself you can rightly claim to be successful.
Success is really a very personal thing and we all have different ways of measuring success and we all use different measuring standards.
I know that the tendency is to look at people making a lot of money and say that they are successful but if that so called successful person is still driving himself to make more money what does that say about how he views success. Perhaps his measure of success is an even larger pile of money than what would be sufficient for you and I. Or perhaps to him, having a lot of money is simply a means of achieving other measure of success - being able to provide for his family or - being able to provide employment for others or - the ability to give generously to charity or - becoming famous etc..
So I guess what I am saying is: Do not worry what other people may think. Set you own goals and when you achieve them and are happy with yourself, then you are truly successful.
