I usually see a question and then I think about it for a while before I answer it.
When I answer the question I use my own words, experience and honest opinion - my answers are often very different from other answers on the same question. I read the other answers to compare other people's point of view - I don't know it all and other opinions might shed more light and teach me something new.
I also think you have to answer questions shortly after they are posted - it gives people more opportunities to vote - more people will read your answers and vote on it.
The one thing you should not do is answer a question if you know nothing about the subject or answer it in a language other than English - it narrows the amount of people that can actually read and vote on your answer dramatically.
The more you learn the better equipped you will be to give valuable answers - and I think it is fun too.
