I'm an ECA wanting to sell my products internationally. How do I determine how much to charge for shipping to other countries that is fair to both me and my customers?
A good marketing strategy must be developed that ensures your profit. You are a conscientious business person and that's good. Remember when it comes to costs, you have them so your customers must have them. Businesses don't stay profitable when this balance of power is lost.
However, companies that fleece customers with exorbitant prices without equal value find themselves in the unemployment line. To find your balance, you must do research. You don't own your own courier so you need to know what they charge and past that cost on to the buyer. Every major courier has an online presence so it is easy to determine their rates.
Some companies opt to ship to certain countries because they find it easier to do this than to try to calculate shipping costs to every country in the world! Distance, weight, category, customs, and many other variables come into costs when you ship internationally.
What I do is factor in the cost of goods and mark it up 40 to 60 percent. Never mismatch product value and price. For higher priced items always have exceptional quality to justify the expense. Other variables in the marketing environment will also affect your decision but you costs is going to be the main determinant. Then mark up the item reasonably to make a profit. You can adjust this for volume sellers. Items that are luxurious won't produce a lot of volume so the price should be higher.
