I prefer bidding manually over using the auto-bidder. With manual bidding you are almost guaranteed to use less bids. You have more control of when to place each bid: beginnIng, middle, or end of each countdown clock. The auto-bidder always works to make you the highest bidder no matter what. Every time a bid is placed that is not yours, the auto-bidder places a bid for you. This process ends up using more of your bids, especially when more than one other person is bidding against you.
Manual bidding definitely takes more time and patience. As the saying goes, "Time is money". So for some auto-bidding may make more sense. Also, when auctions run for a few hours, auto-bidding is a savior if you need to step away form your computer for a few minutes.
I have used both methods and I still like manual bidding the best.
