I would say it is dependent on your audience and your marketing plan. Who are you targeting? What is your marketing method?
If you marketing majorly offline and are always physically present to explain to the intended client and help them sign up, it is not a compulsion that you own a website or a blog to be successful. Infact generally, a website or blog is not a must for success in SFI, its just an added advantage. Your SFI page is good enough to convert visitors to PSAs.
Where it becomes necessary is in cases where you market in the social medias, some of these have blocked the SFI gateways due to spam. In such a case, you will definitely need your own personal domain to direct convert to.
