I love this question. I have done blogs and purchased websites. Unless your website is an actual advertising site search engines are probably not going to list you very high on their list. Blogs on the other hand are loved by search engines.
What we search for on the internet is information. That would be the case world wide. So fill your blog with useful information and use the key words that are relevant to your blog. Be sure not to stuff your blog with key words, rule of thumb is 10 key words or phrases every one hundred words. Use those mostly in the first paragraph and last paragraph. Most people will just scan your blog and will usually read the first and last paragraph.
Search engines will crawl your site looking for key words and phrases that are relevant to you blog.
Unless you are going to pay to advertise your blog it will take at least 4 to 6 months to get on the first two pages of the search engines. Depending on how much useful content you have.
