People want to feel special, and sending an e-card or personal note to let them know you are standing by them is the easiest way to let them know you care. I always ask them to send me a note about themselves, as well. Being known is powerful. If they will tell you about their situation, not only does it help you direct your advice better, but it ties them to you in an incredible way. It is less likely that they will drop out without talking to you about it first, for example.
Being transparent yourself - telling your story to your team - will also tie them to you. If they know you have similar struggles, dreams and desires, they will know that they can achieve at least as much as you have. Being a person of mystery is great for the Secret Service, but not for team building!
