I find the best way to begin the month is to take a pad and pen and calculate how you are going to achieve your desired ranking for the month.
For action points take into account:
Your 11 daily VP
Your 38 weekly VP [loaded on a Sunday to multiply it by the number of Sundays in the month]
Your 15 monthly VP
If you have one your 100 SO VP
Then you can caluculate the number of points you are short to achieve your rank and determine how you are going to get them. You can also determine which days to do which extra activities to earn VP in order to maximimise your entries into the Daily Grand. I usually spend about an hour doing this.
I find planning my month ahead of time gives me the motivation to face the whole month and keeps my enthuiasm up especially when I see myself achieving even the smallest of goals for the month...staying on track.
