She would save them up in a stamp book. She would have a "wish book" with items she would save the stamps for. When she had enough for an item she wanted, she would redeem the stamps to receive an item for the redemption value.
She was collecting a rebate for her purchases. MRP are valuable and spendable, as a form of rebate.
