There are good reasons to tell family and friends, and there are good reasons not to. It depends on your family relationships - whether they are generally supportive or not.
One word of warning is that, if they have not been in business themselves, or if they are not ambitious themselves, they might be skeptical of those who are ambitious, and could try to talk you out of it.
Personally, I tell my family of my position only when my position is already sound and proven. Then I can dismiss any negativity they put my direction.
