Since teams usually need someone to lead the effort, the team must have principled leadership. YOU! Together with members, create inspiring goals that fire the imagination. These clearly defined goals would be known to all members and the team should be allowed to operate in a manner that produces results. All members must be competent. Those not interested in the groups’ progress must be left out. This may sound harsh but you don’t want your group to lose enthusiasm.
There must be a collaborative climate of trust produced by honest, open, respectful and consistent communication. Team members must know what is expected of them individually and collectively.
Ensure that there is unified commitment as members can feel a sense of ownership towards their role in the group because they committed themselves to goals they helped create. Let individuals use their talent and experience to contribute to the success of the team’s objectives. Encourage each individual to express their opinions, new ideas and questions. Each can participate equally in decision making, but understand that the leader might need to make the final decision if the team can not come to an agreement.
Get to know something special about each team member so that he feels always connected. Develop good team exercises. Working as part of a team can improve learning. Encourage strong intercommunication so all will know what stage the team is at.
Encouragement and praise works well in motivating individuals. Celebrate team successes publicly. Give everyone the same reward. Put team member names in a drawing for company merchandise and gift certificates. Include their name in your blog or leadership page in bold letters!
You are limited in teamwork only by your imagination. Follow these steps and let them boast about their team and their leader. Patience, persistence and perseverance is crucial to make success happen but it can also be fun.
