Here's what I was taught years ago.

Watch some tv commercials and take a pen and paper and take notes. What makes you want to go out and buy what they're advertising? Was it funny? Did the items they were selling do something for you? What makes that product better than another? Pay close attention to the similarities in most tv ads. Do you see any patterns?

Now open up a newspaper classified section and do the same thing. What pops out at you and makes you want to read it? Are there some emotional words in these ads that push some button in your mind? Make a note about how it made you feel.

Now apply all this to your own ads and you'll get some takers.
