Well that question is quite easy for me to answer, because I WAS one of those struggling affiliates, until I learned what I am about to tell you...
I joined WAVE3 ($1.95) and I bought a 100-TCredit pack for 3 months. I promised myself that I would force myself into success, since I was on a limited budget. I set aside $87 and said that is the ONLY money I will spend on SFI.
In the first month, all I did was study. I studied the SFI system, I studied the TC business and I studied the PB auctions. I didn't sponsor anyone, I didn't try to win any auctions, I simply studied and did my necessary VP to become EA. I also received Credits for my won T-times, Daily Grand, and E365 contest.
By the time the 2nd month came, I had 200+ TCredits and many VP's. Since I had been studying the SFI business AND the auctions for the entire month, I decided to finally put into use what I've learned. It took 8 tries, but on the 9th try, I won the PTP on one of the items - I had earned 50 more Tcredits. I went back to studying the rest of the month.
When the 3rd month came, I was armed with over 350 TCredits and a plethora of information. I did 5 more PTP bids and won 1 for 50 TCredits; then with 400 TCredits, I did my first auction - I won a 400 credit auction and ONLY spent 15 credits. I had about 800 credits now. I used my credits to bid on a "featured auction" and won that too. I won it for $2.94, but was able to sell it for $129 - over a $100 profit... guess what I did...
Month 4 - I used my earnings to pay for SO and I was well on my way to simply repeating what I had done. Now, I haven't spent my own money in about a year... I LOVE it...
