I started sponsoring within a few days of joining as I was certainly very lost and unsure what to say and if I had anything worthwhile to say.
Firstly be honest open and upfront. Initially you can convey your own enthusiasm and excitement to your new affiliates. "It's the sizzle that sells the sausage"
Start from the premiss of your own experiences and feelings. What initial guidance would have helped you, and put that into a first mailing through your PSA mailer.
Be personable, as you are communicating with people from all over the world they are only going to get to know you via your words. Build relationships with your active affiliates as you will all mutually benefit from each others success.
Don't be afraid to ask your new affiliates to commit take actions like Submit their profile, send the commitment message and upload their photo.
This gets them earning points and making a good start to getting to Executive Affiliate. Movement and progress excites, stagnation will demotivate.
I get good results with this approach and manage to fire up develop and growing number of active affiliates.
